## Yeast Propagation — Cost Correction (Apr 1, 2026)

### Old Practice (wasteful)
- 110 gal: 7.5 lbs DME propagation + brick yeast = ~$41.50/batch
- 70 gal: 3.5 lbs DME propagation + brick yeast
- Pitch rate was still borderline under

### New Practice (optimal)
- Direct pitch from brick: 75100g per 110 gal batch
- 100g from 500g brick = 5 batches = $33/batch yeast
- Zero DME cost for propagation
- Proper pitch rate achieved

### Key Numbers (LD Carlson prices)
| Item | Price |
|---|---|
| DME Briess 50 lb | $110.00 |
| Nottingham brick 500g | $165.00 |
| Nottingham satchel 11g | $3.59 (MoreBeer) |

### Realization
- Full propagation (10 lb DME) costs nearly as much as direct pitch from brick
- Simple propagation (1 lb DME) saves only ~$7/batch vs direct pitch
- Underpitching + DME propagation was the worst of all worlds: expensive AND underpitched
- Brick direct pitch is the move for 3.5 bbl Nottingham batches
